I painted this during church service. The dove is symbolic of the Holy Spirit, because when Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist, as described in Matthew. 3:16…"he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him.” Earlier in the same chapter John said to the crowd that he (John) baptized unto repentance, “but, He (Jesus) that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire." Matthew 3:11.
What did John mean by fire? You get an explanation in the next verse…Mat. 3:12 “Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
We all have some chaff in our lives that we need to get rid of. It is part of the repentance process. Sometimes we still want to hold onto things, but, if we want to please God, we need to give up those things that hinder our walk with Him. Fire can be quite painful, but, it is necessary in the refining process. Gold has to be put through the fire, burning out all the impurities so that all that’s left is the pure gold. The refiner watches over the hot gold and knows it is ready when he can see his reflection in it. When Jesus looks at you, does He see His own reflection?
“Examine me, O Lord, and prove me; try my reins and my heart.” Psalm 26:2
