Wisdom

Wisdom

But the wisdom that is from above is first pure,

then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated,

full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality,

and without hypocrisy. James 3:17

Wisdom, by Nancy Cupp, is a watercolor painting of a 300 year old tree exhibited at the Toledo Museum of Art.

This painting was inspired by a 300 year old oak tree that we pass by on our way to visit family. We never noticed the tree until the owner cleared away all the brush. This majestic hidden treasure was patiently waiting to be enjoyed again by a new generation. It's gnarled and twisted branches seemed to quietly say that there was a lot of history within it's branches; a time when the Indians lived there, a time when our country was being birthed, a time when the settlers struggled to make a new home within it's grounds, and a new time for us to ponder and enjoy.

Shortly after I painted it, the owner cut off several of its branches, but it still lives in quiet dignity, strength, and wisdom. If only trees could talk.

In 2012 this painting was accepted into the Findlay Area Artists Exhibit at the Toledo Museum of Art, Toledo, Ohio. It won first place in the 2013 Golden Age of Art held at the Hancock Co. Agency On Aging in Findlay, Ohio.
